What Is Supported Living — and How Is It Different From Residential Care?

Supported living is a model of care that enables adults with a range of needs to live in their own home — within a staffed, shared, or individual property — with the level of support they need to live as independently as possible.

Unlike residential care, where the care provider is responsible for both accommodation and care as a single combined service, supported living separates the two. As a supported living resident, you hold your own tenancy agreement, which gives you legal rights to your home and full choice over how your daily life is structured.

This model works particularly well for adults who have a genuine desire for independence, who want to develop life skills and community connections, and who benefit from consistent, skilled support to do so safely and confidently.

Staffing, Hours, and How Supported Living Is Funded

Staffing and Support Hours

Our supported living properties are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The level and type of staffing — waking nights, sleep-in, or a combination — is determined by the assessed needs of the individuals.

We allocate named key workers to every resident to ensure consistency, familiarity, and trust.

All staff hold Enhanced DBS certificates and are qualified to a minimum of NVQ / QCF Level 2 in Health and Social Care. Senior staff hold Level 3 and above. Mandatory training — including safeguarding, medication management, positive behaviour support, and mental health awareness — is completed before any member of staff works unsupported.

How Supported Living Is Funded

Supported living is most commonly funded through:

  • Local Authority Care Packagefollowing a social care needs assessment
  • NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC)for individuals with a primary health need
  • Integrated Care Board (ICB) Fundingin conjunction with health commissioners
  • Personal Budgets and Direct Paymentswhere an individual manages their own funding
  • Private / Self-Fundingfor individuals funding their own care arrangement

Housing costs (rent) are typically funded separately through Housing Benefit or Universal Credit.
